A River with Depths of 3-200 Feet?

5 Sep

Yes, indeed. It’s the Mighty Mississippi.

It’s not so mighty in looks, but the stats will make a girl reconsider her first impression.

It flows at three feet per hour (the pace of a person walking).  The depth ranges from 3-200 feet at different locations, and fluctuates 50 feet (!) depending on the weather and water flow. Given this variance, no permanent docks.  The largest river system in North America and the fourth longest river in the world, it drains 31 states and floats 500 million tons of freight every year.

Yes, I went on a riverboat, and no, not much to say. I got a bit queasy–would you like the details with rich adjectives? I did like the ropes, as you’ll see in the slideshow. The best part of the riverboat ride was spending time with the river, contemplating its power.

What’s the most powerful place in nature you’ve been?
